How fish stocking works

What the DWR public stocking report tells you and what it does not, with numbers from the report itself.

What the report shows

DWR's public stocking report lists one row per stocking: the water, county, species, number of fish, their average length in inches and the date. It covers 2002 to today (59,777 records). DWR adds stockings after they happen. It does not publish future dates.

Fish sizes in 2025

DWR stocked 12,239,102 fish in 2,544 records in 2025. Grouped by the average length DWR reports:

  • Under 6 inches: 9,025,501 fish (74%).
  • 6 to 8 inches: 654,862 fish (5%).
  • 8 inches and longer: 2,558,739 fish (21%) in 1,621 records.

From the guidebook

  • All state fish hatcheries are closed to fishing, including the warmwater hatchery at the Lee Kay Public Shooting Range. (guidebook p. 15)
  • State waterfowl management areas are closed to fishing unless posted open or listed as open in the specific waters section. (guidebook p. 15)
  • National wildlife refuges in Utah are closed to fishing unless the managing agency declares them open. (guidebook p. 15)
  • The DWR may issue emergency changes for drought, construction, dam repairs or rotenone treatments; check wildlife.utah.gov/guidebooks and pick View guidebook updates. (guidebook p. 4)
  • At Scofield and Strawberry reservoirs, the DWR stocks large predatory fish to keep nuisance baitfish under control. (guidebook p. 45)
  • Anglers who want a new species in a public water are asked to contact their local fisheries biologist rather than moving fish themselves. (guidebook p. 44)
  • Endangered bonytail and razorback sucker are stocked in parts of their native range by the Upper Colorado River Recovery Program. (guidebook p. 68)
